Blow-Fill-Seal
The Reliability of Blow-Fill-Seal: Safe, Efficient, Innovative Aseptic Processing
A cost-efficient and scalable advanced aseptic process
Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS) technology is one of the most advanced and reliable methods for producing sterile liquid medicines. In a single automated process, containers are formed, filled, and sealed within a controlled sterile environment, significantly reducing human intervention and contamination risk.
This integrated manufacturing approach ensures consistent quality, precise dosing, and efficient large-scale production of sterile medicines commonly used in hospitals and healthcare settings. By utilizing BFS technology, we help strengthen the reliability of pharmaceutical supply while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.
The Vanguard companies are committed to supporting our mission to rapidly deliver urgently needed medicines. The speed, efficiency, and reliability of our advanced manufacturing technologies allow us to respond quickly to supply shortages and help ensure healthcare providers have dependable access to the critical medicines their patients rely on.
BFS Details
Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS) is a modern pharmaceutical manufacturing technology that is transforming how sterile liquid medicines are produced. Designed to combine efficiency, safety, and scalability, BFS integrates container formation, filling, and sealing into one continuous, highly automated process. For essential liquid generic pharmaceuticals, many of which experience recurring shortages, this technology offers a powerful opportunity to produce high-quality medicines more reliably and at scale.
The BFS process begins with pharmaceutical-grade plastic resin that is heated and extruded into a hollow tube called a parison. A mold then closes around the tube, shaping it into the final container while sterile air expands the material into the mold cavity. Within the same enclosed system, the newly formed container is immediately filled with sterile liquid medicine and then hermetically sealed.
This integrated approach is one of BFS’s greatest strengths. By forming, filling, and sealing the container in a single machine, the process significantly reduces opportunities for contamination. The result is a highly consistent, sterile product produced with exceptional reliability. Because the technology is heavily automated, it also supports stable, repeatable production; an important factor when manufacturing medicines that patients and healthcare providers depend on every day.
BFS also delivers remarkable efficiency. Production lines can generate thousands of units per hour, allowing manufacturers to meet large-scale demand while maintaining rigorous quality standards. At the same time, the plastic containers produced through BFS are lightweight, durable, and cost-effective compared with traditional glass packaging. These efficiencies help reduce manufacturing complexity and support more sustainable supply chains.
Greater Reliability for Hospitals

For liquid generic medicines supplied to hospitals and pharmacies, these advantages are especially meaningful. Many of these drugs, such as sterile solutions, respiratory therapies, and injectable liquids, are vital to patient care yet frequently experience supply disruptions. Our manufacturing platform built around BFS technology can provide the reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency needed to strengthen supply.
By leveraging Blow-Fill-Seal technology in a dedicated manufacturing facility, it becomes possible to rethink how essential liquid generics are produced and delivered, both in the U.S. and abroad. With its combination of sterile integrity, production speed, and operational efficiency, BFS offers a compelling path toward a more resilient and dependable supply of medicines for healthcare providers and the patients they serve.
